I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited. With all the GM recalls in the news, I decided to Google myself up some Montero recalls, and came across a few. One specifically caught my attention, as it relates to the brake booster making a whining noise from the left of the dash (could cause fiery death, blahblahblah). My Montero, with 143,000 miles, has this whine and, I suspect, this issue. Car was purchased from a family member recently; he purchased it with about 55k miles on it.
I've never dealt with recalls before, but I'd like to get my shit fixed if it needs it, especially when the manufacturer will cover the cost.
My question is this: Can i ring up a Mitsu dealer around here (Phoenix) and ask that they assess and possibly repair my car under recall? Will they laugh in my face? Are you laughing in my face right now? Any guidance is appreciated.

I think there is a 10 year statute of limitations on them, but I'm proably wrong.

Most places will honor recalls indefinitely I believe

If your vehicle is eligible for a recall fix, it should still be there.

Iirc there is like a 10 year limit on recalls (that's at least what I was told once) but some dealers will honor it or they will just charge labor.

I'd call a dealer and see what they say. Can't hurt to ask.

From what I understand, manufacturers are supposed to seek out the owners of affected vehicles and notify them. Either you or whoever owned the Montero at the time should have been contacted if yours was part of the recall.

If it hasn't been fixed before, then they still will fix it. My best friend just sold his 2002 Montero Limited and had the recall done last summer.

you can take it for recall, but manufacturers aren't forced to fix it if the recall is over ten years old. Also, sometimes if a car is worth less than the cost to perform the recall, they may just offer to buy the car, but that isn't too common.

Yep. We just took our 2001 Mazda Tribute to the dealership to get all the recall repairs made. A few of the recall notices were 9 or 10 years old. Parts were in stock at the local dealership & all the repairs were made within 48 hours.

toyota did that with a lot of rusty tacomas about 10 years ago. I had a friend that had it happen to him. They even gave him full value for all of his mods, then the dealer let him put it back to stock!
